# Evidence and legal boundary

> Learn what Nautilius commitments prove, what they cannot prove, and which Lagos land processes remain external.

Nautilius records tamper-evident commitments and transaction state. It is not a land registry, title verifier, law firm, survey practice, or licensed Nigerian escrow provider.

## What an evidence commitment proves

The browser hashes title evidence locally, combines that digest with 32 random bytes, and commits the salted value. Raw title documents do not go onchain. The original document and salt remain under the user's control.

Later, a matching document and salt can demonstrate that the committed bytes have not changed.

## What it does not prove

A matching commitment does not establish:

* authenticity or ownership;
* priority or absence of encumbrances;
* survey accuracy;
* valid Governor's Consent;
* registration or government acceptance;
* legal title or beneficial ownership.

Predictable parcel metadata can still be guessed unless it is salted and kept out of public inputs.

  The seller supplies consent and registry-evidence references. Nautilius checks lifecycle position and nonzero, unique commitments; it does not contact Lagos State or validate the truth of those references. In the current state machine, a seller can commit arbitrary evidence and advance a funded deal, so a buyer still requires independent legal review.

## External completion process

Nautilius does not:

* issue a Certificate of Occupancy;
* convey statutory or customary rights of occupancy;
* perform professional searches or due diligence;
* obtain Lagos State Governor's Consent;
* pay statutory fees;
* register an instrument with government authorities.

Use the official [Lagos State eGIS portal](https://landonline.lagosstate.gov.ng/index.html) and qualified Nigerian professionals for the external legal process. Nautilius provides a coordination and evidence layer around that process.
